I’m not a fan of feel-good aphorisms. They make me cringe or reach for the nearest receptacle.

“You have to love yourself before anyone else can truly love you.”

Ugh, where’s that receptacle?

Where’s the proof of it?

I’m a physicist (and serial entrepreneur), not a psychologist… and I haven’t found any confirmatory studies to show that liking yourself is important at all (although it feels good to say it).

There’s a 2017 study published in Health Psychology Open that found that people who have higher levels of self-compassion tend to handle stress better, but that’s hardly the same thing.
